UNIVRSLL Chat
A chat app for browser, phone and desktop where direct messages are encrypted on your device — the server only ever stores ciphertext.

The parts that matter.
End-to-end encrypted DMs
Text and file attachments are encrypted on the sender's device using X25519 key exchange. Your private key never leaves your computer — so the server, and even I, only ever see ciphertext.
Channels and direct messages
Public channels for group conversation, private one-to-one DMs you can create and delete. Real-time across every machine you're signed in on.
Works offline
Messages queue while you're disconnected and send the moment you're back. Nothing is lost across a dropped connection.
Files, images, markdown
Share attachments and images inline, and format messages with markdown.
Updates itself
Ships with an auto-updater — install once and it keeps itself current in the background.
Blocking and reporting
Block a user to hide their messages and DMs, and report accounts to admins.
From start to done.
- Open the app in your browser — nothing to install
- Create an account and sign in
- On a phone, add it to your Home Screen and it behaves like a normal app
- Prefer a desktop app? Download it for Windows or Mac — it is not code-signed yet, so choose "More info → Run anyway" on Windows, or right-click → Open on Mac
Why it exists, and how it’s built.
The encryption, honestly described
Each device generates an encryption keypair on first login. The public key goes in your profile; the private key stays on the machine. Direct messages are encrypted with a shared key derived from both users’ keys, so the server stores nothing readable.
The tradeoff: because the private key only lives on your device, DM history can’t be recovered on a new machine yet — there’s no key backup. Lose the device, lose access to old encrypted messages. Public channels are deliberately not encrypted, since they’re public by definition.
Built with
Tauri v2 wraps a React and TypeScript frontend in a Rust shell, which keeps the installer small compared to an Electron build. Supabase provides Postgres, auth, realtime, and storage, with row-level security governing access. Encryption is libsodium.
Status
Runs in any browser, on iPhone and Android as an installable web app, and as a desktop app for Windows and Mac. The browser version shows no warnings at all. The desktop builds are not code-signed yet, so Windows shows a SmartScreen prompt and Mac needs a right-click → Open on first launch. Actively developed.
